According to mythological beliefs, Rishi Muni was born on this day, hence the word Mauni is believed to have originated from the word Muni. It is believed that on this day the water of river Ganga becomes nectar. On this day the gods reside in the waters of the Ganga. According to the scriptures, the god of mind is Chandradev. Moon is not sighted on Amas day so silence is observed on Mauni Amas day.
Why is Mauni Amas celebrated?
Religious and astrological significance is attached to Mauni Amas. According to astrology, when the Moon and Sun come into Capricorn, Mauni Amas is celebrated. The importance of this day increases due to the influence of the energies of both the Moon and Sun planets. In astrology, the Sun is considered the father and the factor of religion, so Mauni Amas is celebrated when the Sun and the Moon are in Capricorn. This is the reason why donating on this day is manifold.
What to do on Mauni Amas day?
Donate Sesame seeds, Sesame ladoo, Sesame oil, Amla, cloth etc. after bathing on Mauni Amas. On this day feed the poor, sadhus, mahatmas and brahmins and donate them woolen clothes like blankets etc. On this day black sesame seeds mixed with jaggery should be made into laddus and tied in a red cloth should be donated. On this day, apart from bathing and donating etc., Pitru Shraddha should also be performed.
On Mauni Amas, women should worship Lord Vishnu by sitting under the Pipla tree to increase their good fortune. On this day one should circumambulate the Pipla tree. According to the scriptures one should bathe in Narmada, Kaveri, Ganga, Indus and other holy rivers on this day. By doing this many drawbacks are eliminated.
What not to do on Mauni Amas day?
Do not speak anything while taking bath on Mauni Amas day and remain silent before taking bath. Do not allow an atmosphere of discord in the house. Fights and disputes should be avoided on this day. Do not lie or speak bitter words to anyone on this day. On this day, oil should not be applied on the body and oil massage should not be done.
Those observing Mauni Amas fast should observe complete celibacy on this day and do not eat tamasic food. Don't sleep till late in the morning and don't eat without taking a bath. Do not go to deserted places on Amavasya.
