New rules have been announced for mobile SIM cards. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) announced new rules on March 15, 2024, which will be implemented across the country from July 1, 2024. TRAI says that fraud can be curbed by changing the rules. However, this may cause difficulties for common users.

What changed in the rules?

Under the new rules, mobile users who have recently swapped their SIM cards will not be able to port their mobile numbers. Let us tell you that SIM exchange is called SIM swapping. SIM swapping happens when the SIM card is lost or broken. If this happens, you can ask your telecom operator to replace your old SIM with a new SIM.

What would be the benefit?

TRAI says that such a step has been taken to prevent incidents of fraud. The new rule is put in place to prevent fraudsters from resorting to SIM swapping or mobile connection porting immediately after replacement.

What is sim swapping?

In today's age, SIM swapping scams are on the rise, where fraudsters can easily capture your PAN card and Aadhaar photo. After this, they get a new SIM card on the pretext of losing the mobile. After this, the OTP received on your number reaches the fraudsters.

Recommendation of TRAI

TRAI has recommended the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to launch a new service that displays the name of every incoming call on the mobile user's handset, whether the name is saved in the contact list or not. This will help curb the incidence of fraud. But this has raised questions about privacy.
