What happens if there are equal votes?

This has happened several times in India's electoral history when two candidates have received equal number of votes. There are rules to choose a winner in such a situation. According to Section 102 of the Representation of the People Act, if two candidates get equal number of votes, the winner will be decided by lottery or toss. According to this law, the person who wins the lottery will be declared the winner. Because he got extra vote.

Has this ever happened?

The answer is yes. In the Rajya Sabha elections held in Himachal Pradesh this year, Abhishek Manu Singhvi of Congress and Harsh Mahajan of BJP got equal votes.
