Is the ITR filing deadline really extended?

The Income Tax department has issued an alert regarding the news going on on social media. The department said that a news clip is doing the rounds on social media. It is being claimed that the last date of ITR e-filing has been extended to 31 August 2024. The agency has clarified that this news is false. The last date for filing ITR for the financial year 2023-24 is 31 July 2024.

Cheating in the name of Income Tax

The Income Tax Department has warned taxpayers to avoid fake news and new scams in the name of tax refunds. The department said that some scammers are emptying people's bank accounts by sending SMS and emails in the name of tax refund. The department has appealed to people to be cautious. Any message or email regarding tax refund must be confirmed through official channels.

So far 4 crore people have paid tax

Despite all this, the Income Tax Department has reported a huge increase in ITR filings. 4 crore ITRs have been filed till July 22, 2024 which is 8 percent more than last year. This year, on July 7 and July 16, the mark of 2 crore and 3 crore was crossed. Last year, the mark of 4 crores was crossed on 24th July.

Many organizations demand to extend the deadline

However, many taxpayers and chartered accountants are facing many problems in filing taxes due to technical glitches. Many taxpayers and chartered accountants are complaining of many technical issues on the income tax portal. They want the deadline to be extended. Organizations like ICAI, Karnataka State Chartered Accountants Association (KSCAA) and All Gujarat Federation of Tax Consultants have sought an extension of the deadline till August 31, 2024, citing several issues.
