Italy PM Giorgia Maloney seeks €1,00,000 compensation in deepfake video case

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has demanded compensation in the Deepfake video case. This amount of compensation will be 1 Lakh Euro ie 90 Lakh Rupees. The case is under trial at the Sassari Court in Sardinia. Prime Minister Maloney's statement will be taken in court on July 2, 2024.

What is the whole matter?

In 2022, a video of Georgia Maloney was posted on an American adult content website. At that time Giorgia Maloney was not the Prime Minister of Italy. The accused superimposed Georgia's face on the adult film star's face. That is, Maloney's deepfake video was created using face morphing technology.

According to media reports, the mobile was used to upload adult videos. The police traced the mobile and arrested the 40-year-old accused. Surprisingly, his 73-year-old father was also involved in this work. Together, they created a fake video using artificial intelligence.

What can be the punishment?

According to a statement released by Maloney's team, the video, which was uploaded in 2022, has been viewed by millions of people. According to Italian law this is a crime punishable by 6 months to 3 years in prison. However, when the accused were caught, the trial began. A defamation case was filed against both accused on behalf of Georgia Maloney. Now a compensation of 1 lakh Euros i.e. about 90 lakh rupees has been demanded as damages.

Why demand compensation?

Maloney's lawyer, Maria Giulia Meronghiu, said the compensation the prime minister is seeking is symbolic. The aim of this compensation is to send a message to women victims of such crimes that they should not be afraid to raise their voices. If compensated, he will donate the proceeds to help women victims of violence.
