History of the Flag:
On 13 May 1965 at 12:30 noon, the Kausheya flag was planted by the then Chairman of the Trust and Maharaja of Jamnagar, Digvijay Singh Jamsaheb, after the reconstruction of Sri Somnath Temple.
Structure and method of flag:
The flag of the first Jyotirlinga Sri Somnath temple is 21 meters in total. In which Mahadev's trident and Nandiji are seated. This flag is hoisted at a height of 155 feet on the main peak of the temple. Personnel trained by the Trust climb to the summit with ropes and safety belts tied from the summit to the bottom. The Trust offers Swahast Dhwaja Rohan Service so that devotees can hoist the flag on the peak with their own hands. In which the devotees place the flag in a container and hoist it with a rope to reach the peak.
The flags for the temple are made by local middle-class women through the Shree Somnath Trust, a flag maker. At present, local women have become self-sufficient by getting employment by making flags. For 3 generations this family has been doing flag making. They say that flag making is not just work but Sadhana. And Shree Somnath Trust under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is rejuvenating the shrine by promoting local employment.
Special preparations for audition:
Devotees who come for darshan at Somnath specially perform flag worship and pray for the salvation of their family and ancestors.
