World AIDS Day was started in 1988 to spread awareness about HIV/AIDS. Since then the cases of this disease have decreased worldwide. In the last 25 years, many campaigns have been launched to prevent this disease. People were informed about condoms and a massive campaign was also carried out on the causes of HIV infection.

If we talk about India, there has also been a decline in AIDS cases in the last two decades. HIV cases in India are declining at a rate of 40 percent annually at the national level. According to the National AIDS Control Organization, 2.40 million people are living with HIV. About 80 percent of these patients belong to the age group of 15 to 49 years. 25 years ago this figure was many times higher than this.

The UN has expressed happiness over the declining cases of HIV and predicted that the disease could be eradicated by 2030, but in some cases this appears to be out of step with reality. HIV cases are increasing in some states of India. According to the report of Times of India, the graph of HIV has increased in four states of India.

HIV cases in Punjab have increased by about 117 percent from 2010 to 2023. During this period, cases of the virus have increased by 524 percent in Tripura, 470 percent in Arunachal Pradesh and 125 percent in Meghalaya. Nationally, cases of this virus have decreased by about 44 percent. According to the National AIDS Control Organization, HIV infections are declining nationally. The graph of this disease is decreasing every year. However, some states have seen an increase in infections.

Why are the cases increasing in these states?

An official of the National AIDS Control Organization said on condition of anonymity that whether it is Punjab or the North East states, drug addiction is on the rise. Addiction has become a fashion among the youth. As only one syringe is used to inject drugs, young people do not know that this syringe can transmit HIV. If one person has HIV and uses their used syringes, everyone will be infected.

A common belief about HIV is that it can only be spread through sexual intercourse. In such a situation, the youth does not know the reason for its spreading like this. In some cases, even if they are aware of it, HIV infection appears to be mild compared to drug addiction. This is the reason why the cases of this disease are increasing in these states.

It is necessary to raise awareness about HIV

HIV There is awareness about But it needs to be increased. From urban areas to rural areas, people know how HIV is spread, however, in some rural areas, patients with the disease consider it a contagious disease, meaning a disease spread by breathing or sneezing and eating together. This needs to be worked on. People also need to understand that HIV is not only transmitted through unprotected sex but also through the use of syringes and blood transfusions.
