Don't want to be coach of Team India... These two stalwarts turn down the offer, IPL becomes a headache for BCCI

As the IPL 2024 season draws to a close, the T20 World Cup is also about to start from next month. This means that there is no time for players and cricket fans to breathe as the tremendous action is set to continue. But amidst all this the Board of Control for Cricket in India is also looking for the next coach of Team India and currently they are not getting much success. In just a few hours, two veterans have turned down the offer. A major reason for this is the BCCI's favorite tournament, the IPL.

Dravid's tenure will end after the T20 World Cup

Team India head coach Rahul Dravid's tenure will end with the T20 World Cup in June. In such a situation, the Indian Cricket Board announced the search for his successor earlier this month. The board had also given an advertisement for this a few days back and May 27 is the last date to apply. Although the board has given Dravid an option to reapply, he too does not seem ready to do so.

Ponting flatly refused

According to reports, the BCCI has also approached some of the biggest names in world cricket but they don't seem to be getting any success. Currently, the biggest name in this is former Australian captain Ricky Ponting, who has clearly refused to become the coach of Team India. In the last few days there were reports that the Indian board had approached some veteran players including Ponting. Ponting admitted in an interview to the ICC that some people approached him during the IPL and they spoke to him. Ponting said the discussion was to gauge his interest in becoming a coach.

Ponting wants to spend time with family

Ponting further said that he would definitely love to be the full-time coach of the national team but at the moment it does not fit into his lifestyle and hence he cannot be the coach of Team India. Ponting, coach of Delhi Capitals in the IPL, said that he has a lot going on in his life right now and wants to spend time at home. Ponting then emphasized on the most important thing and that is the IPL. Ponting said that after becoming the coach of Team India, he cannot coach in the IPL, which is an important issue. He said that staying with the team for 10-11 months does not fit his lifestyle right now.

Flower is also happy with IPL

Andy Flower, the coach of Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL itself, has also rejected this job. When former Zimbabwean legend Flower was asked about this after Bengaluru's loss in the eliminator match, he made it clear that he had not yet applied and would not. Flower described coaching only in franchise tournaments as enough for him and said that he is happy with IPL coaching.

Gambhir and Fleming did not respond

Recent reports claimed that the BCCI has approached legends like Gautam Gambhir, Ricky Ponting, Stephen Fleming and Justin Langer for the role. Gambhir and Fleming have not said anything about it so far but like Ponting, Justin Langer has already ruled it out. The special thing is that all these are associated with different IPL teams as coaches/mentors.
