Most of the accidents are due to defects in road engineering. Gadkari said that I have advised the engineer that dividers should be made on the highway so that people cannot jump over them.
He said that I have observed very carefully that most of the accidents are due to defects in road engineering, but for every road accident the driver is held responsible but that is not the case. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said that there are about five lakh road accidents in India every year. Of these, 1.5 lakh people die and three lakh people are injured.
More deaths in road accidents than in war
Addressing FICCI's Road Safety Awards and Conclave 2024, Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said that more people die in road accidents in India than war, terrorism and Naxalism. This causes the country to lose three percent of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Poor detailed project reports (DPRs) of road projects have led to an increase in the number of black spots.
Due to which road accidents are more. Gadkari said the Road and Transport Ministry has also decided to construct more foot over bridges with provision of ramps on highways passing through urban areas so that two-wheelers can use them.
Emphasis on safety audit of highways
Gadkari emphasized the need for safety audit of all highways. He said that we need to follow lane discipline to reduce the number of accidents. Gadkari said the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is preparing a code for ambulances and their drivers, so that they can be trained to use sophisticated machines like cutters to rescue road accident victims quickly.
