Gurmeet Ram Rahim: The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday granted major relief to Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim. The High Court has acquitted Gurmeet Ram Rahim in the Ranjit Singh murder case. The High Court rejected the CBI court's order of life imprisonment. The High Court acquitted five more people including the Dera chief in this case. In the Ranjit Singh murder case, the Panchkula CBI court sentenced Gurmeet Ram Rahim to life imprisonment in 2021 and a fine of Rs 31 lakh. Ranjit Singh was assassinated in 2002.

The case is 22 years old

This is a 22 year old case. In which the CBI court declared Ram Rahim guilty after 19 years. Ranjit Singh was the manager of the camp, who was shot dead on July 10, 2002 near his fields in Khanpur Kolyan village of Kurukshetra district. In 2003, a year after Ranjit's murder, his family asked the CBI to investigate the murder.

A charge sheet was filed in the case

But the then government did not listen to them. After this, his family approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The High Court handed over the investigation of the case to the CBI. Four years later, i.e. in 2007, the CBI took action against some of the accused and registered a case against them. This year, the CBI filed a chargesheet in the case. Since then, the hearing of this case continued continuously.

On 18 October 2021, a special CBI court in Panchkula declared Gurmeet Ram Rahim guilty. The court sentenced Ram Rahim to life imprisonment. Now the Punjab and Haryana High Court has acquitted 5 accused including Dera chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim.
