After Gir's saffron mango, Katchi Kharek gets Geographical Indication, second fruit from Gujarat to get GI tag
The famous Kutchi Kharek from Kutchi Sukamewa has got the GI tag. Desi Kharek of Kutch has created history with GI-tag.
Kutch's Kharek farmers are happy to be honored as the Bharat Ratna of agriculture. Kutch Kharek is the first farm produce of Kutch to get GI tag.
In the state of Gujarat, first saffron mango from Gir, Bhaliya wheat and now desi kharek from Kutch have got GI tag i.e. Geographical Indication. Thus Kachchi Kharek became the second fruit in Gujarat and the third crop to receive GI tag. Farmers of Kutch are happy to be honored with the GI tag, the Bharat Ratna of agriculture.
Congratulating on this, State Agriculture Minister Raghavji Patel said that this recognition has been given by the Chennai-based "Office of the Controller General of Patterns, Designs and Trade-Marks" under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry of the Central Government. Also important was the contribution of Husenbhai Turk, a representative of the Turkic families and a veteran farmer pioneer who cultivated the first Kharek in Kutch 425 years ago on the land of Dhrab in Mundra taluka.
The Agriculture Minister added that Gujarat has established a Center of Excellence for Dates at Kutch with technical support from Israel with the aim of equipping date growers with the best technological know-how which is functioning with the facility of demonstration plots of modern technology. The government is also promoting new planting of Kharek. Due to which farmers will produce Kharek with high technology and G. I. Thanks to the tag, farmers will be able to get better prices in the competitive market and the farmers of Kutch will be more prosperous.
