The last week has been a very sad one for German football. Former legendary captain and manager Franz Beckenbauer, who led the country to two world champions, has died at the age of 78. One of the best defenders of his era and one of the greatest players in football history, Beckenbauer was instrumental in making Germany a football powerhouse.

'Dei Kaiser' Franz Beckenbauer

Beckenbauer, who started his career as a midfielder at the age of 20, transformed himself into a defender role within a few years and stood like a mountain in front of opposing strikers. Beckenbauer came to be known as 'Der Kaiser' (Der Kaiser) or 'King' due to his brilliant play.

Great player of Germany and Bayern Munich

Following Beckenbauer's death, a special event was held on Friday 19 January at the Allianz Arena, the home ground of Germany's most famous club Bayern Munich, to commemorate his contribution and his legacy. Beckenbauer played 584 matches and scored 75 goals for Bayern Munich in several domestic and European tournaments, including the Bundesliga. He was also the club captain for a long time.

Germany became the world champion

Born in 1945, Beckenbauer made his international debut for West Germany in 1965 at the age of 20 and made his mark the following year by scoring 4 goals in the 1966 World Cup. However, his team lost to England in the final. After this Beckenbauer became an important part of the German team. As captain in 1974, the veteran ended the World Cup wait and made West Germany champions. Beckenbauer played his last match for Germany in 1977. He played 103 matches for West Germany.

Won the World Cup as a player-manager for the same team

Then in 1984, he took charge of West Germany as manager and led the team to the final of the 1986 World Cup, where they lost to Argentina. But Beckenbauer did not give up and completed his revenge by defeating Argentina in the final of the 1990 World Cup. He became the first person in football history to win the World Cup as a player and manager with the same team. With Bayern Munich, he won the European Cup three times in a row between 1974 and 1976.

TV9 network paid tribute

On Beckenbauer's death, the entire football world paid tribute to him and the TV 9 network even organized a special show in his memory. In this special program of TV9 channel News9, Bundesliga Senior Advisor Peter Leibl and Borussia Dortmund's Asia Pacific Head Yulia Farr remembered Beckenbauer.
