If Priyanka Gandhi wins by-election from Wayanad, Gandhi-Nehru family will create history

2024 was a great election year for the Congress, which faced crushing defeats in the last two elections. This time Congress has got 99 seats. The good news for the Congress is that the party's long wait is about to come to an end. Because Priyanka Gandhi Vadra is now ready to contest her election.

Priyanka Gandhi: After the good performance of Congress in the Lok Sabha elections, all eyes are fixed on which seat Rahul Gandhi will go to the Lok Sabha from. This time Rahul won the election from Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh and Wayanad in Kerala. In such a situation, he has to give up one seat. While resigning from the Wayanad seat, Rahul retained himself as an MP from the Rae Bareli seat.

Along with resigning from Wayanad, the Congress also announced that Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will be a candidate in the by-elections to be held on the Wayanad seat. If Priyanka wins the election from Wayanad, the Gandhi-Nehru family will create a new record in Parliament.

Priyanka Gandhi entered active politics in the year 2019

After a long wait, when Priyanka Gandhi entered active politics in the year 2019, there were all sorts of speculations about her contesting the elections. Sometimes claims were made for him to contest from the traditional Amethi seat of Uttar Pradesh, sometimes from mother Sonia Gandhi's Rae Bareli seat and sometimes from Varanasi Lok Sabha seat. But she never entered the electoral fray.

For the first time, three family members will become MPs

However, now the party has announced to field Priyanka Gandhi Vadra from the Wayanad seat in the by-election. Priyanka, who has so far confined herself to election campaigning, will now try her luck in the election arena for the first time. If Priyanka clears her first electoral hurdle now, it will be a historic moment in parliamentary history.

If Priyanka Gandhi wins the Lok Sabha by-election from Wayanad, it will be the first time that a mother, son and daughter of the Gandhi-Nehru family will be in Parliament together. Sonia Gandhi is currently the Rajya Sabha MP, while Rahul Gandhi has reached the Lok Sabha after winning the election from Rae Bareli.

The first pair of father-in-law and son-in-law

However, many times before this at least 2 members of this Gandhi-Nehru family have been in Parliament at the same time. When Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was the Prime Minister, his son-in-law Feroze Gandhi was an MP of the Lok Sabha. Feroze Gandhi was first elected as an MP from the Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seat in 1952 and then in 1957.

PM Nehru was also a Lok Sabha MP (Phulpur seat) during this period. Indira Gandhi first started her parliamentary career in 1964 by becoming a member of the Rajya Sabha. When he won the Lok Sabha elections for the first time in 1967.

A mother-son pair from the Gandhi-Nehru family became MPs

In the 1980 elections, Indira Gandhi was elected as an MP, after which her son Sanjay Gandhi was also elected as a Lok Sabha MP from the Amethi seat. For the first time in Parliament, a mother-son pair from the Gandhi-Nehru family became MPs. But a few months later, Sanjay died in a plane crash.

In such a situation, the by-election was held here. Sanjay Gandhi's elder brother Rajiv Gandhi started his political career in the 1981 by-election to the Amethi seat and reached the Lok Sabha. At that time Indira Gandhi was also an MP of the Lok Sabha and her son was also elected as an MP.

The mother-son duo has been working for over 20 years

Then in the year 2004, the mother-son pair from the Gandhi-Nehru family again reached the Parliament. Sonia Gandhi was elected MP from Rae Bareli and her son Rahul Gandhi started his political career from Amethi.

Varun Gandhi won from Pilibhit in 2009

The family of Feroze and Indira's second child Sanjay Gandhi is also constantly in politics. The pair of Sanjay's wife Maneka Gandhi and son Varun Gandhi also served three terms in Parliament. Varun Gandhi started his electoral career in 2009 by winning the election from Pilibhit seat.

Then Maneka Gandhi was elected as MP from Amla seat. In 2014, Varun became an MP from Sultanpur, while mother Maneka reached the Lok Sabha from Pilibhit. In 2019, Varun was elected as MP from Pilibhit for the third time while Maneka won from Sultanpur.

Maneka Gandhi's family will not be seen

However, in 2024, Maneka lost the election after a hard fight when her son was not fielded by the BJP. On the other hand, Sonia and Rahul, the mother-son duo, have been in Parliament since 2004 till now. But now Sonia is a member of Rajya Sabha instead of Lok Sabha.

Now, exactly 20 years later in 2024 this unique mother-son duo will go one step further and include a daughter with them. By-elections will be held on the Wayanad seat in the next 6 months. If Priyanka wins the by-election, three members of Sonia Gandhi's family will be seen together in Parliament after 6 months. While no member of Manka's family will be seen in Parliament.
