Gautam Gambhir tweeted, 'I have requested party president JP Naddaji to release me from my political duties so that I can focus on my upcoming cricket commitments. I sincerely thank Hon'ble Prime Minister and Hon'ble Home Minister Amit Shah for giving me the opportunity to serve the people.

Gautam Gambhir joined the BJP in March 2019 and has since been a prominent face of the party in Delhi. He contested from the East Delhi seat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and defeated the Aam Aadmi Party. He won by a huge margin of 6,95,109 votes. Gambhir is currently the team mentor of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) franchise and works with head coach Chandrakant Pandit. Under Gambhir's leadership, KKR became the IPL champions in 2012 and 2014. This year's IPL is going to start from March 22.
