According to the tweet, anemometers will be installed at 14 places on the 508 km long route of the bullet train. An anemometer is a device that measures wind speed. This will increase the security of the bullet train.

The task of installing anemometers has been entrusted to the National High Speed ​​Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL). NHSRCL has been set up specifically for the Bullet Train project. This has the participation of Ministry of Railways and Government of Gujarat and Government of Maharashtra. NHSRCL informed that 5 out of 14 anemometers will be installed in Maharashtra and 9 anemometers in Gujarat. Why Need an Anemometer?

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train corridor will pass through the coastal areas of the western part of the country. Wind speed is quite fast here in some areas. Sometimes it becomes so strong that it is not safe to run a train on the viaduct. A viaduct is a bridge-like structure that connects two piers. A few days ago, the Union Railway Minister informed that a total of 153 km of bridge work has been completed in the bullet train project. Anemometers will prove to be very important for the safe operation of bullet trains on this bridge.

How does an anemometer work?

An anemometer is a type of disaster prevention system that collects real-time data of wind blowing at a speed of 0-252 kilometers per hour. Its special feature is that it monitors wind gusts from 0 to 360 degrees. For this reason, to deal with strong winds and storms, NHSRCL has identified 14 such locations (9 in Gujarat and 5 in Maharashtra) where anemometers will be installed on the viaduct.

Now to talk about how this will work. If the wind speed is in the range of 72 kmph to 130 kmph, the train will adjust its speed accordingly. The Operation Control Center (OCC) will monitor the wind speed through anemometers installed at various locations. Anemometers will be installed at these 14 places-

  • Bengal Para – Maharashtra
  • Vaitarna River – Maharashtra
  • Dahanu – Maharashtra
  • Daman Ganga River – Gujarat
  • Navsari Suburb – Gujarat
  • Tapi River – Gujarat
  • Narmada River – Gujarat
  • Central part of Bharuch-Vadodara – Gujarat
  • Mahi River – Gujarat
  • Bareja – Gujarat
  • Sabarmati River – Gujarat
