Air fares skyrocket as festivals approach. You too must have experienced this problem many times and felt troubled by the steep increase in rent. Now this problem of yours has caught the attention of a committee of Parliament and the committee has recommended to stop it.

Fares go up during festivals

Parliament's Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture has advocated regulation of domestic flight fares. The committee, headed by YSR Congress MP V Vijayasai Reddy, says domestic airlines increase fares as festivals and holidays approach. Many cases have been observed in this regard. In such a situation, the committee says that aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation should be empowered to regulate the fares of domestic flights.

This is how the rent is determined

Air fares are currently determined dynamically. For this, the aviation companies have been empowered to self-regulate. Under dynamic fare the fare increases automatically if more inquiries and bookings are received on a particular route or on a particular day. In many cases it has been observed that air fares increase manifold during peak hours.

Self regulation is not effective

The parliamentary committee has also received such cases. The committee has said in its report that self-regulation by airlines is not effective. The committee has come across many cases where there was an unusual increase in air fares especially during festivals and holidays. If the DGCA examines the records, cases of violations by aviation companies may come to light.

DGCA should prepare the system

The committee says there is a need to monitor airfares on domestic routes. For this the committee suggested that the DGCA should create a mechanism to regulate air fares. The ministry may also create a separate entity for this, whose job will be to monitor the air fares. For this, that entity can also be legally empowered.
