Lok Sabha Election Result 2024: How is victory determined if two candidates get equal votes? Know the special things related to counting of votes

Lok Sabha Election Result 2024: Have you thought who will be your next MP if two candidates get equal votes?

Lok Sabha Election Result 2024: Voting has been done in seven phases for 543 Lok Sabha seats across the country. The result will be declared today i.e. 4th June. But what if two or three candidates get equal votes? Has this ever happened? The answer is yes. If yes, how is the winner decided?

What happens if there are equal votes?

This has happened several times in India's electoral history when two candidates have received equal number of votes. There are rules to choose a winner in such a situation. According to Section 102 of the Representation of the People Act, if two candidates get equal number of votes, the winner will be decided by lottery or toss. According to this law, the person who wins the lottery will be declared the winner. Because he got extra vote.

Has this ever happened?

The answer is yes. In the Rajya Sabha elections held in Himachal Pradesh this year, Abhishek Manu Singhvi of Congress and Harsh Mahajan of BJP got equal votes. But Harsh Mahajan of BJP was declared the winner under the rule of lucky draw 'draw of lots'. However, there is a big difference in the rules of lucky draw to declare the winner in Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha. The candidate whose ticket is released in the Lok Sabha elections loses the election. When in the Lok Sabha election the person whose ticket is released wins.

So many times the same vote has been received

During the 2018 Assam Panchayat Elections, candidates were declared winners in six seats by tossing a coin. Because two candidates got equal number of votes in all these six seats. In December 2017, the winner of the Mathura-Vrindavan Municipal Corporation election was also announced through a lottery. A similar incident was witnessed in February 2017 during the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation i.e. BMC elections.
