Internet will run uninterrupted in the country's first underwater metro, this special antenna will be installed in the tunnel

Passengers traveling in the country's first underwater metro will continue to get mobile internet connectivity during the journey. Telecom companies Vodafone-Idea (Vi) and Airtel (Airtel) have used a special system in the tunnel for this.

Passengers traveling in the country's first underwater metro will get superfast internet connectivity even inside the tunnel. Telecom operators Vodafone-Idea (Vi) and Airtel have used a special IBS (In-Building Solution) system for this. Both these telecom companies have confirmed that passengers will continue to get network signal on their mobiles while traveling under the Hooghly Nandi between Kolkata and Howrah. PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the East-West Corridor of the Kolkata Metro on 6 March 2024.

Passengers will get better mobile connectivity in the country's first underwater metro tunnel passing 16 meters below the river bed. Considering the convenience of passengers, telecom companies have installed special antennas in this tunnel, with the help of which calls and data can be accessed. For better mobile connectivity 42 meters below the ground, telecom companies have used IBS systems, especially for indoor stadiums, large and tall buildings, tunnels, etc. Come on, let's know about this IBS system…

What is IBS?

In-building solutions (IBS) systems transmit a mobile operator's cellular signal inside a building. With the help of this solution, high capacity mobile communication is established inside buildings or offices, shopping malls, hospitals, stadiums, airports etc. With this solution, several hubs or equipment are installed in the indoor environment, which transmit the signal to the antenna. Through IBS, the wireless signal received by mobile devices is strengthened.

2G/3G/4G/5G LTE and Wi-Fi 6 network signals can be transferred through the IBS system. This system uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to create a high-speed user network, through which Internet services can be provided at speeds of 10 Gbps to 100 Gbps. You must have seen such antennas in shopping malls, hospitals, airports and even big buildings etc.

How does it work?

Silicon is used in IBS systems, which help provide better network coverage indoors. A mobile tower installed on the land surface of a telecom operator is considered as a base station in this system. From there the telecom signal reaches the antenna installed in the building where the IBS system is used. This antenna is called donor antenna. After this, with the help of repeaters and splitters, the signal is sent to different service antennas. User devices connect to the mobile network through service antennas. This is how the entire IBS system works.
