The death toll may increase
According to a PTI report, data is still being collected from several districts regarding the damage caused by Cyclone Ramal and the damage is being calculated. The administration has shifted more than 2 lakh people to 1438 safe shelters. Food is being delivered to these shelters by 341 kitchens.
The areas that were hit the hardest by Cyclone Ramal include Kakdwip, Namkhana, Sagar Dwip, Diamond Harbour, Fraserganj, Bakkhali and Mandarmani. The cyclone caused minor cracks in the embankments, which were promptly repaired. However, no information about the embankment breach has been received so far. Any that were reported were minor and were corrected immediately.
Coastal areas suffered the most
So far six people have lost their lives due to the cyclone. A woman died in Kolkata, two women in South 24 Parganas district, one in North 24 Parganas district and a father and son in East Medinipur. Coastal areas suffered the most damage due to the cyclone.
Cyclone Ramal hit the coastal areas of West Bengal on Sunday night. Along with its collision, many areas witnessed heavy rain along with strong winds. Several NDRF teams have been deployed to monitor the cyclone. The impact of Cyclone Ramal was seen in Bangladesh as well as West Bengal.
Devastation in coastal areas in Bangladesh
The cyclone ravaged the coast of Bangladesh, destroying thousands of homes, breaching seawalls and flooding many villages and towns along the southwestern coastal areas. The cyclone has so far killed 10 people in Bangladesh, while the storm has completely destroyed more than 35 houses and affected more than 37.5 lakh people.
