Born on Friday, 3 March 1967 in the Chembur suburb of Mumbai, Shankar Mahadevan attended Our Lady of Perpetual Sugar High School and Swami Vivekananda School in Chembur for his schooling. Later, he obtained his bachelor's degree in Computer Science and Software Engineering from Ram Rao Adic Institute of Technology, Navi Mumbai in 1998.

Shankar Mahadevan was already an accomplished harmonium player and started playing the harp as well. He trained in Hindustani classical music from Pandit Srinivasa Khale and was mentored in Carnatic classical music by TR Balamani. His musical journey began with an early rise to fame as an indiepop star blending Carnatic, Hindustani and jazz influences.
